Holocaust Reflection

Thinking back about what Eddie Jaku said in the Ted Talk, I realise how scary it must have been to live in this period of time, more particularly in Europe, knowing that the Nazi were gaining territory and could kick down your door at any time. I would also be separated from the members of my family, something I cannot even begin to imagine, and be transported somewhere but not knowing where and find yourself in a concentration camp not knowing what is going to happen. At least Eddie Jaku managed to stay with his family at first but when he was sent to Auswitch, he was completely alone with nobody to protect him. It must have been really difficult to survive because he didn't know anybody and that meant the couldn't trust the people around him. I mean, everyone in the concentration camp was trying to survive and sometimes steeling food was the last option, even if it means putting someone else's life at risk. In Eddie's case, he didn't get to see his parents ever again and that is something nobody can get through. Eddie got lucky in a certain way because he managed to escape that horrible place and hide in the woods. He was also lucky that the American army found him and not the Nazi because if they did, he would have joined countless other Jews in death during the death march. He is one of the few who survived this tragedy and, unlike many others, he succeeded to regain happiness in his life even after all the atrocities he endured. Most of those who survived were not able to go back to a normal life and I understand them. How can you go back after seeing so much hatred, so much death and so much evil coming from humans. During the Holocaust, millions of Jews were killed because they were Jews, not because they did something wrong but simply because of their belief. It makes me think about all those times in history when a specific group of people were targeted for no reason other than being who they are. It also teaches us that everybody is different, everybody thinks differently, everybody has their beliefs, but everybody is equal in every possible way.
