Connections

There were a lot of similarities between the workshop and the movie Indian Horse. The obvious one is that both were about the indigenous people. Aside from this easy example, the workshop and the movie both made me realise how difficult it must have been to be separated from your family to go and live in Native residential school. They also made me understand the impacts that these Native residential school had on the indigenous people and helped me understand why some of them fall in alcoholism. Last but not least, they both made a good representation of the feeling indigenous people felt throughout their life. This movie also has a lot of links with my novel, which is Kindred. We cans see the similarities through the themes addressed in both works. One of these themes is the suicide and it is represented well in the book and in the movie. Diary of Rufus

  Today:   In the morning I went near the trees to show my friend Nigel how good I was at climbing on trees. As I went up, f ewer  bran ches were  in my  reach,   and the y were getting smaller and smaller.  I saw one that was not so big and looked like it was dying. I grabbed it anyway because she was one o f the last ones and the other  were  way to small. It started making noise and at some point it j ust broke. I  saw Dana for a quick moment on the bed  and it looked like someone was fighting with her but then  I was  laying  on the ground. Nigel came over me to see if  I was okay. The Exposition, Chapter One

    The novel begins with a short explanation that Dana and Kevin are moving in a new place and shortly after, when the are placing books in shelves, she start feeling dizzy, then she is in a completely different place and she sees a boy drowning.      The author really gets your attention in the prologue because he starts by saying that Dana lost an arm after her last trip because she got stuck in a wall and that the police are blaming Kevin for it. Dana was also trying to tell the police that it was an accident and that Kevin had nothing to do with it but she did not want to explain what really happened and she says later that it was because she knew they would not believe her. But why?      The first few pages of the first chapter are really intriguing and make you want to read more because you do not know what is going on and why Dana is suddenly in a totally different place. You immediately start to wonder if she teleported or time trave...

Holocaust Reflection

Thinking back about what Eddie Jaku said in the Ted Talk, I realise how scary it must have been to live in this period of time, more particularly in Europe, knowing that the Nazi were gaining territory and could kick down your door at any time. I would also be separated from the members of my family, something I cannot even begin to imagine, and be transported somewhere but not knowing where and find yourself in a concentration camp not knowing what is going to happen. At least Eddie Jaku managed to stay with his family at first but when he was sent to Auswitch, he was completely alone with nobody to protect him. It must have been really difficult to survive because he didn't know anybody and that meant the couldn't trust the people around him. I mean, everyone in the concentration camp was trying to survive and sometimes steeling food was the last option, even if it means putting someone else's life at risk. A summary of Octavia E. Butler's life by Gabriel Derrien, Felix Babin, Blanche Morin, Marguerite Lamy, Guillaumen Jacques

  Octavia E. Butler Born in Pasadena, California on the 22nd of June 1947, Octavia Estelle Butler was a famous writer back in the late 70s and early 80s. She was the daughter of Laurice James Butler and Octavia Margaret Guy Butler. Unfortunately, her father died when she was seven years old, and she was raised by her mother and her grandmother. She discovered her passion for science fiction after watching one of David MacDonald’s movies, which was Devil Girl from Mars. Science fiction then became the inspiration of all of her novels. She became successful in 1979 after publishing her fourth book out of the fifteen she wrote, entitled Kindred. She went to John Muir High School then went to Pasadena City College, but she was only doing night classes, and she graduated with an associate of arts degree.
